German Poetry and Lieder

The group meets on Fridays from 2pm to 4pm on alternate weeks.

Discussions will be in German and English.

Have you ever wondered what sentiment was hiding behind those beautiful and often languid songs by Schumann, Schubert, Brahms, Wolf etc? Here is your chance to find out.

We shall discover the secrets in the poetry and then listen to the song to hear how the composer has matched the mood or the story of the poem. There is an opportunity for participants to do a bit of homework by finding out about the background of the composer or the backgroud of the poet.

Your understanding of the German language has to be of a reasonable level to get the utmost enjoyment out of reading the poems. I shall guide you through the poems and I shall welcome your interpretation.

However, I must warn you - many of the poems are not jolly, much of it is a cry from the heart. So be prepared!
