The course is designed for those who "did" French sometime ago and who now wish to brush up what they learned then.
The year long course is divided into three series of ten or eight weeks (May to mid July, October to mid December and mid January to mid February).
Last year after our first series of 'brush-up' sessions, I imagine many of the group members found themselves on holiday deep in conversation with nice, friendly French people (Yes, of course they exist!) exchanging details of their families, their home life, their likes and dislikes, their hobbies and interests.
In the second series, we dealt with being in town: on asking directions and making sure we understood the quick-fire responses, ordering meals after sorting out the menus, going shoping for souvenirs and presents to take home. By contrast we also spent a little time preparing to say what one can do on a rainy Wednesday evening in Stafford!
Later, we grappled with the complexities of the past tense in order to learn all about that misunderstanding in the restaurant in Nice, that contretemps at the poolside in Biarritz and that fracas outside the nightspot in Rouen.
The emphasis is on enabling members to speak French in meaningful situations. The principal points of grammar are gently introduced but always with the aim of making oneself understood in the language.
